Islamic New Year Countdown: How Many Days Left?

The next date by Umm al-Qura

The Islamic New Year is 1 Muharram, the first day of the Hijri year. The Hijri count starts from the Prophet’s ﷺ Hijra from Mecca to Medina and was adopted for dating in the time of the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab. Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, follows it.

By the Umm al-Qura calendar, Islamic New Year 1449 AH falls on Sunday 6 June 2027. The month of Muharram 1449 AH has 29 days, from 6 June 2027 to 4 July 2027.

Two consecutive dates are 354 or 355 days apart, which is why the date moves about 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year.

How the countdown works

The countdown measures the time left until midnight at the start of that day in your device’s time zone, and updates every second. If you change the “Adjust the day” option the date moves with it. The reminder button creates an ICS file with an alert one day before; it is generated in your browser and no data is sent anywhere.

About accuracy: dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. The start of a month may differ by one day from the official announcement in your country, which is based on moon sighting. You can adjust the day (±1) above, and you can read how we calculate.
