Method and Accuracy

Every conversion on this site uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, a calculated calendar that Saudi Arabia uses for civil purposes and that is built into modern browsers. Supported range: 1318 to 1500 AH (about 1900–2076 CE). All calculations happen inside your browser and no date is sent to a server.

Limits of accuracy

In some countries, Morocco among them, months begin with the sighting of the crescent, so the official announcement can differ from Umm al-Qura by one day. The site does not show any country's official Hijri date and is not a way to confirm the start of Ramadan or an Eid; for that, follow the official announcement in your country.

The status of each date

Next to every event we show its status so that calculated dates are never confused with announced ones:

  • Calculated: follows directly from the Hijri month date in Umm al-Qura.
  • Expected: calculated with Umm al-Qura but dependent on moon sighting or an official announcement in your country (such as the start of Ramadan and the two Eids).
  • Officially announced: a documented official announcement exists and its source is shown. This label only appears after an announcement has been entered by hand and verified.
  • Traditional date: a matter on which scholars differ (such as the Mawlid).

Adjusting the day

Pages that show a date offer an “Adjust the day” option (add or subtract one day) so you can match your country's announcement. Your choice is stored in your browser only.

When the Hijri day begins

The Hijri day begins at sunset, whereas the date on this site changes at midnight on your device's clock.

The Moon

The Moon phase and brightness shown are approximate (a mean calculation) and can be off by several hours.
