How to Convert Your Birthday to the Hijri Date

Date conversion · 7 min read · Last updated:

Many people know their birthday only in the Gregorian calendar, then need the Hijri date for a form, an occasion or simple curiosity. The next question is: when is my next Hijri birthday? Here is the method, then a fully worked example.

Steps

  1. Open the Hijri birthday tool.
  2. Enter the day, month and year of your Gregorian birthday. If you know your Hijri birthday and want the reverse, choose "Hijri" in the calendar field.
  3. Press calculate. You will see your Hijri birth date with the day of the week, your age in both calendars and the next Hijri anniversary with its Gregorian date.
  4. You can copy the result link, but it contains your birth date, so share it only with people you trust.

A worked example

Someone born on 15 May 1990 (Tuesday). By Umm al-Qura that is 20 Shawwal 1410 AH. Their Hijri birthdays (20 Shawwal) in coming years fall on:

Hijri yearGregorian dateDay
1448 AH28 March 2027Sunday
1449 AH16 March 2028Thursday
1450 AH5 March 2029Monday
1451 AH23 February 2030Saturday

The date moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year: late March in 2027, late February in 2030. After roughly thirty-three years it returns to the same season, as explained in Hijri vs Gregorian Calendar.

Why is your Hijri age larger?

The Hijri year is about 10.9 days shorter. On 29 October 2026 this person is 36 years, 5 months and 14 days old in Gregorian terms, and 37 years, 6 months and 28 days in Hijri terms, about a year and a month more. If an authority sets an age threshold, check which calendar it uses. The tool shows both ages in detail and the total number of days.

If you were born on day 30

Some Hijri months have only 29 days. If your Hijri birth date is day 30 of a month and that month has 29 days in a later year, there is no day 30 that year. The tool places the anniversary on day 29 and notes that the day was adjusted because the month is shorter. The same happens in the Gregorian calendar: someone born on 29 February is shown on 28 February in non-leap years.

A second example: someone born on 7 January 2000 was born on 30 Ramadan 1420 AH. Ramadan 1448 has only 29 days, so the tool sets the anniversary on 29 Ramadan 1448, that is 8 March 2027, and says the day was adjusted. This is more common than you might expect, since about half of all months have thirty days.

A third example: born on 1 January 2000

That is 24 Ramadan 1420 AH, so the Hijri anniversary in 1448 AH is Wednesday 3 March 2027, in 1449 AH Sunday 20 February 2028 and in 1450 AH Thursday 8 February 2029. You can see how it moves back 11 or 12 days each year.

What if you were born after sunset?

The Islamic day begins at sunset, while the site shows the civil day that changes at midnight. If you were born in the evening after sunset, your birth may traditionally be assigned to the next Hijri day. If you need that level of precision, use the "day adjustment" option or consult the official document you need.

How does the tool work inside?

It converts your Gregorian birth date to Hijri with the same engine the whole site uses, then searches for the same Hijri day and month in each coming Hijri year. For each year it computes the matching Gregorian day and names the weekday. If the month that year is shorter than your birth day, it falls back to the last day of the month and warns you.

Practical tips

  • Official documents: rely on the birth date written on the document; do not derive it from a tool. The tool is for information and planning.
  • Celebrating the Hijri birthday: the date moves about 11 days each year, so compute it ahead each time instead of assuming a fixed day.
  • If you only know the Hijri event: for example born in Ramadan, enter the Hijri date to see what it corresponds to.
  • For families: make a calendar file for each family member's Hijri birthday for the next ten years.

Accuracy note

The tool calculates with Umm al-Qura, and the date in common use in your country may differ by one day in some cases. Do not use it as official proof of a birth date; the reference is the official document issued by the competent authority. See the disclaimer.

Common questions

Does the calculated Hijri date match my ID card? Not necessarily. Official documents may use a different calendar or conversion, so rely on the document.

Why does my Hijri birthday not fall on the same Gregorian date next year? Because the two years differ in length; it moves back about 11 days each Gregorian year, as the table shows.

Can I work out a birth date from an age? Use the age calculator or date difference.

Put your Hijri birthday on your phone

From My events and reminders you can create a calendar file with your Hijri anniversary for coming years and an alert a day before. The steps are in How to add a Hijri event to your phone calendar.

How to check the result by hand

You can verify any result without relying on the tool alone. In our example, 1 Shawwal 1410 AH is Thursday 26 April 1990 by Umm al-Qura (you can find it in the monthly calendar). The birth date is 20 Shawwal, so add 19 days (20 − 1) to 26 April and you reach 15 May 1990, the birth date itself. The method works for any date: find the first day of the Hijri month, then count days, remembering that the first of the month is day 1, not day 0.

What if you only know the Hijri month and year?

Sometimes a person does not remember the Gregorian day but knows they were born in Ramadan of a certain year. Choose "Hijri" in the tool, enter the day you think it was, and compare the result with the possible dates in that month (29 or 30 days). For the exact day, go back to an official document or birth certificate.

Does the "day adjustment" change my Hijri birthday?

Yes. If you set the "day adjustment" to match your country's announcement (adding or subtracting a day), your displayed Hijri birth date and the date of its anniversary may shift by one day, because the adjustment applies to every conversion on the site. Your choice is saved only in your browser, and you can return to "Umm al-Qura (default)" at any time. The adjustment does not, of course, change your Gregorian birth date.

To get a result that matches what your family uses, try the three options and compare, then keep the date that the people around you agree on.
